TOV Performance

PROTECTA*LITE® Disconnectors & TOV Performance

For example: A PROTECTA*LITE System with an 84 kV MCOV can handle
84 kV x 1.49 = 125 kV from line to ground for a 10-second period of time.

PROTECTA*LITE systems are normally furnished with a disconnector (also called an isolator). The disconnector is connected in series at either the line or ground end of a PROTECTA*LITE arrester. The disconnector reacts to rapid increases in power frequency (60 Hz) current flow through the arrester.

In the rare case event exceeds the capability of a PROTECTA*LITE, the isolator will disconnect the arrester from the transmission or distribution system. By sacrificing itself, PROTECTA*LITE protects your line from damage attributed to dangerous temporary overvoltage conditions. Furthermore, the disconnector prevents a permanent fault on your line, while providing a visual indication that the arrester needs to be replaced. For an operational overview of the PROTECTA*LITE disconnector please contact your local Hubbell Power Systems representative.

The typical temporary overvoltage (TOV) capability of a PROTECTA*LITE arrester is illustrated in the TOV chart below. To use the chart, select the amount of time that the overvoltage event will be present on your line. Then select the overvoltage factor based on that time period, and multiply it by the MCOV of your PROTECTA*LITE System. This is the 60 Hz overvoltage that your PROTECTA*LITE can handle for the time period selected.
